This origin for this embolic pneumonia was, in this case, the mammary glands. They could have come from a heart valve, joint, or ligament infection or even the jugular vein or mammary vein, if they had a mycotic infectious thrombi in them which they did not.
The swollen lung seen here shows many pinhead to approximately 1cm. dark foci throughout the lung. These are slightly firm on palpation although some of them are depressed because they were elevated with gas when the animal died. The animal also has a severe mastitis in this instance which was the source for the mold, presumptive
Aspergillis, that caused the lung lesion.
