Davis-Thompson Foundation, Global Health Pathology Network, Gorilla Doctors, and University of Rwanda Pathology Workshop
School of Veterinary Medicine – CAVM University of Rwanda, Nyagatare Campus
November 28, 2023 @ 8:00 am – November 30, 2023 @ 5:00 pm Nyagatare, Rwanda
The Global Health Pathology Network (GHPN), which is under the umbrella of the Davis-Thompson Foundation, conducts workshops in resource-constrained settings focused on enhancing veterinary diagnostic abilities using interactive educational modalities and adult learning principles. Workshop objectives emphasize basic mechanisms and pathogenesis, necropsy and proper sample collection, lesion descriptions, and generation of morphologic and differential diagnoses based on gross examinations.
Participants include field veterinarians, pathologists, para-veterinary workers, and laboratory professionals from universities, government, and the private sector. Discussion facilitates opportunities to strengthen connections – in-country, and internationally. Successful workshops were held in Uganda and Rwanda in 2022 in partnership with Gorilla Doctors, GHPN, Davis-Thompson Foundation, University of Rwanda, and Makerere University.
Based on the success of the previous workshops and to continue to facilitate sustained collaborations with Rwanda, we are presenting two new pathology workshops on the Nyagatere Campus at the School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Rwanda, on November 28-30, 2023, moderated by 6 facilitators from Rwanda and the United States.

Workshop #1: Workshop on Swine, Small Ruminants, and Poultry Diseases
The goals of this workshop are to teach veterinary students from University of Rwanda about disease recognition and pathogenesis of important diseases of swine, small ruminants, and poultry using interactive case scenarios and group discussion. A necropsy wet lab will also be included, giving students practical, hands-on experience in performing a necropsy, describing gross lesions, coming up with differential diagnoses, and proper sample collection and handling. Veterinary students will each receive a copy of a Field Necropsy Manual of Domestic Animals.
Participants: University of Rwanda veterinary students.
Workshop #2: One Health Workshop on Regional Zoonotic Diseases
The goal of this workshop is to bring together the medical and veterinary students of University of Rwanda to participate in group case scenarios involving important zoonotic diseases of Rwanda. Production animal health is closely tied to human health as well as the environment, and this workshop will facilitate networking between the future medical and veterinary professionals of Rwanda. Image: “Child Milking His Goat” created by Savane Kabuye, an artisan workshop under the direction of Christiane Rwagatare.
The image on this flyer is an intricately crafted embroidery created by a group of Rwandan women who call themselves “Savane Kabuye.” It is one of many collectives of artisans that reflect a larger phenomenon taking place all over Rwanda: reconstruction, reconciliation, and the desire for peace. These women are living in the aftermath of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. They have put the events of the past behind, embracing reconciliation in the hope that their children will have a better future.
