The 2023 Veterinary Pathology Journal Award will be presented to Dr. Avery J. (Jim) Cooley, author of “Vascular, cardiac, and renal lesions attributed to primary systemic hypertension in western pygmy marmosets (Cebuella pygmaea).”

Avery J. (Jim) Cooley did his vet path residency at the University of Florida and was part of the Pathobiology Dept at the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Wisconsin-Madison during which, in addition to teaching and clinical research, he worked with Psychology Professor, Dr. C. Snowdon, and Psychology doctoral student, Anne Savage, on causes of death in a colony of Western Pygmy Marmosets.

He left Wisconsin to return down south and joined the Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine as a professor and veterinary pathologist where he continued to investigate various diseases in a wide range of animal species until his retirement in 2017. Colleagues there praise Cooley’s “stick-to-it-iveness” and collaboration with researchers from other institutions.
