The externship at CAHFS San Bernardino is an experience I will remember for my life!
As a first-year anatomic pathology resident, this opportunity broadened my horizons with necropsy on diverse species, in-depth rounds for pathology knowledge, and system-wide meetings with different diagnostic expertise. I did my first zebra necropsy on my first day, with many to follow, from koi fishes to mountain lions. San Bernardino has a heavy caseload of horses and backyard chickens. Towards the end of the externship, I was comfortable doing the necropsy and could point out lesions gross and histologically. Moreover, I learned the art of racehorse musculoskeletal necropsy and saw many common fractures and preexisting lesions.
CAHFS San Bernardino is a highly welcoming family. I want to express my gratitude to everyone in the lab, especially Dr. Paco Uzal, for this invaluable opportunity, and thanks to the Davis-Thompson Foundation for the generous support.
