System: MUSCLE
Organ: TENDON
Species: CHICKEN
Gen Path Categories:
Diagnosis: RUPTURED GASTROCNEMIUS TENDON
Cause: AVIAN REOVIRUS INFECTION

While historically associated with tenosynovitis resulting from avian reovirus infection or potentially Staphylococcus aureus, many cases have proven to not have a inflammatory nature. The gastrocnemius tendon of meat birds has a poorly organized, hypo vascular area just above the hock joint which may be prone to rupture in heavy birds, or when aggressive breeding males are present in the flock.
