Signalment:8-year-old male castrated American Domestic Shorthair cat
History:The animal was presented to the Auburn University Veterinary Teaching Hospital Emergency &
Critical Care Service in November 2020 for a 4-day history of abnormal mentation and visual
impairment. He was initially presented to his primary care veterinarian a month prior due to
lethargy and inappetence and, a few days later, for difficulty navigating around objects and
walking into walls. Apart from elevated blood pressure (systolic 180-190), complete blood
count, chemistry, urinalysis, thyroxin (T4), SNAP Feline triple test, Toxoplasma antibody titer, as
well as thoracic and abdominal radiographs were all unremarkable. Despite hospitalization and
treatment with clindamycin and amlodipine, the animal did not improve, and euthanasia was
elected.
Gross Lesions:Encephalitis, pyogranulomatous, focally extensive.
