Join the CAHFS team in person for a workshop covering Racehorse necropsy to fulfill Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA) requirements.

The Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA) established uniform, national rules of racing that include, as of July 1, 2022, a requirement that all horses that die at a racetrack under the jurisdiction of HISA (racetracks that conduct interstate wagering) must undergo a necropsy examination. The goals of the examination, essential components of the examination with respect to the etiopathogenesis of racehorse injuries and sudden death, laboratory demonstration of typical racehorse findings, and the standardized HISA necropsy reporting form will be covered in the workshop.

9:00-9:30: General considerations on necropsy of race horses. F. Uzal

9:30-10:00:  Anatomic nomenclature, definitions, fracture classification. S. Stover

10:00-10:30: Break

10:30-11:30: Adaptation of musculoskeletal structures to training and competing. S. Stover

11:30-12:30: Etiopathogenesis of repetitive overuse injuries (stress fractures and stress remodeling). S. Stover

12:30-2:00 pm: Lunch

2:00-3:00: Typical skeletal injuries in racehorses – bone by bone. S. Stover

3:00-3:30: Break

3:30-4:30:  HISA requirements and necropsy form. S. Stover

4:30-5:00: Sudden death: current knowledge and diagnostic workup. F. Uzal

Saturday 19 of August: Labs

8:30-10:00: Dissection of distal limb structures. Demonstration. A. Nyaoke

10:00-11:00: Dissection of distal limb structures; hands-on exercise by participants (all faculty)

11:00-12:00: Demonstration of lesions in all bones (all faculty)

12:00-1:00: Lunch

1:00-1:30: Cardiac necropsy and sample collection. Demonstration. A. Nyaoke and F. Uzal

1:30-3:00: Cardiac necropsy and sample collection; hands-on exercise by participants (all faculty)
